THE MAP OF TENDER: WHAT IS IT?
Very popular in the French Salons of the 17th century, the Map of Tendre (Carte de Tendre) is a French map of an imaginary land called Tendre. It appeared as an engraving of François Chauveau in the first part of Madeleine de Scudery’s (1654-61) voluminous novel "Clélie". The map represents the path towards love according to the Précieuses of the time period. To draw the map became soon a fashion, and even a sign of feminine freedom.
Madeleine de Scudery was a central figure in the famous Salon of Madame de Rambouillet. Her novel "Clélie" embodied the refinements of «preciosity», suffused with feminine elegance, exquisitely correct scruples of behavior, and courtly Platonic love that were hugely popular with female audiences. It has been often considered as the first expression of feminism in French feminine literature and social new behavior.
