English through Art presentation
Nikitskaya JCC is pleased to invite adults to English through Art presentation, by Martin Cooke, on 3, February, 1 p.m.
English through Art, ‘The presentation’ (drum roll…), will first of all give us an introduction to one another. Can I convince you that I am a master of the English language? I don’t know. At least you can taste my authenticity. And I will always be impressed by the initiative which people show when they turn out to an event in order to check it out personally and examine and experience its credentials. So much of what I aim to share with you has to be felt and physically assimilated in order to reveal its worth; actors act. Words are their lifeblood. Actors know some vital secrets about words – they know how to turn them into action. I will show you how to ‘action’ words. I will show you how to understand that behind the action of every word is a source, an emotional source. Actors use a technique called ‘sourcing’ to activate, animate, invigorate, vitalize and ‘action’ their speech. I will show you some simple exercises which will begin to open up the world of the English language to you, in a way which even most native speakers are unaware. We will construct our approach by using distilled and substantial language (e.g. Shakespeare) which takes concentration to comprehend and which cannot fully be understood until it has been learned by heart. These short intense passages are like great jewels which reveal hidden facets and depths of glory the more you look into them. And when we learn them utterly with our bodies and our minds, they help us to understand more common language much more easily, confidently and with greater composure.
The presentation will last for one hour and I will then be available to take questions.
Yours, Martin Cooke
