The aim of the course “English through art” is to perfect students’ master of English language and pronunciation, intonation, vocabulary. The course is further intended to enrich the cultural and emotional understanding of students in relation to the best characters and images of English literature. The main focus is laid on ‘actioning’ and ‘sourcing’ in English – the study of texts at an emotional depth with the help of acting techniques. Psychologists maintain that the more our spectrum of emotions is engaged, the better we assimilate new words. This approach significantly enhances our ability to memorise texts, which after some practice flow freely, thereby also training our audio skills (the art of listening is vitally important to actors).
We user the classical texts of Shakespeare and Shelley, Emily Bronte and John Keats, Byron and Coleridge, and leading contemporary writers, such as Harold Pinter, Dylan Thomas, David Herbert Lawrence and even Chekhov!
In order to be strong, an athlete has to train hard. For actors, who use their voice in their work, it is necessary to develop their voice with the help of essentially simple methods. I will teach you how to strengthen and expand your vocal diapason as well as improve your diction, communication skills and presentation skills.
Intonation. We vary our intonation depending on the situations we find ourselves in. Our intonation during a telephone call is different from during a presentation. I will teach you exercises that develop your intonational contours.
Pronunciation. We are not able to be guided by the categories “correct – incorrect” when speaking of pronunciation. Pronunciation also depends on circumstances and the character and everyday relations of people. However, there are a series of parameters according to which British English differs from American English. I will teach you to study questions of pronunciation without burdening you with a fake and unrecognizable accent which you will not here in authentic spoken English.
In “English through art” the deepening of the cultural and emotional outlook of students and the development of their vocabulary take place automatically. Luxurious English literature, drama, poetry – you will receive pleasure from the language in a creative, pleasant and memorable atmosphere.
